This special issue of Manuscript Cultures explores innovative and scalable approaches to data linkage in manuscript studies and related disciplines. As the humanities increasingly rely on linked datasets, the ability to semantically and structurally link various forms of manuscript-related data, such as texts, images, research data, and annotations, has become essential for advancing research, accessibility, and long-term preservation.
This issue focuses on general approaches to data linkage and brings together contributions that go beyond individual projects or platforms. It presents methods, frameworks and technologies that enable flexible linking of heterogeneous data across different repositories, languages and cultural contexts.
By emphasizing generic strategies, this edition aims to promote sustainable, reusable and widely applicable linking practices. It offers insights not only to manuscript researchers, but also to humanities, natural science and postdoctoral scholars working to build a more connected and open digital research ecosystem.
