Timeline
- course preparation with videos and materials
- March 6 & 7: workshop in Hamburg (summary of lectures given by student(s), Q&A, exercises and discussion of mini-project topics)
- end of May: submission of mini-projects
Credit requirements
- go through the material of at least 5 of the (sub-)topics below. The material is available on the Google Document you have already received.
- prepare the summary of one lecture with one other student, and present this at the meeting – the idea is to form a team of one more math oriented student and one less math oriented one. A list of registered students will be circulated to help teaming up.
- work on exercises and submit 4 solutions, OR
- work on 1 mini-project in group (initiated at workshop) and submit report end of May
Topics
1) PDE and waves
- basic PDE considerations (Camilla Nobili)
- energetic consistency of truncated models (Roland Welter)
- model reduction / asymptotics / slow manifolds (Marcel Oliver)
- potential vorticity-based methods (Ojesh Koul)
- linear waves / wave equation (Anton Kutsenko)
2) Hydrodynamic instability (Jeff Carpenter)
