DESCRIPTION:Literacy is an individual competence that is critical for soci
al participation. It is key to education\, employment\, health\, rights an
d well-being. Yet\, this key is not a singular entity\, not least in conte
mporary differentiated societies marked by migration\; it is complex as it
involves multiple languages\, registers\, modalities\, as well as differe
nt technologies and formats. In a highly mobile and interconnected world\,
migration and digitalization have collided to fundamentally transform wha
t it means to be literate. These emerging complex multilingual\, multilec
tal\, and multimodal literacies may be poorly matched to the literacy requ
irements of institutions with a monolingual habitus (Gogolin\, 1994)\, whe
re literacy practices in one dominant\, standard language prevail. The res
ulting communication gaps can threaten access\, equity\, inclusion\, and c
ost-effectiveness\, and hence constitute a real barrier to social justice
(Piller\, 2016).\nAs all contemporary societies are affected by migration
and digitalization\, with individuals facing the barriers and opportunitie
s associated with multilingualism\, this summer school offers an internati
onally oriented curriculum to outstanding masters and doctoral students.\n
The core learning aims are: \n1) to enhance knowledge on literacy and lea
rner diversity\; 2) to trace tendencies that go beyond one national\, reg
ional or local context\; 3) to examine literacy development across the lif
e-course\; 4) to critically discuss the implications of research findings
for policy and practice.\nThe learning goals will be achieved across five
core modules with required reading: \n1) Literacy across the lifespan\; 2
 ) Institutional settings\; 3) Research methods in social literacies\; 4) A
cademic skills\; 5) Independent course work.\nClick here for the draft pro
gramme: Link\nParticipants of the Summer School can earn 3 Credit Points w
ith additional work.\nThe deadline for applications is 6th April 2026\, mi
dnight Central European Time. Applications will not be accepted after the
deadline. We thank you for understanding. \nDoctoral Symposium - Literaci
es for Social Participation (27. - 28.07.2026)\nIf you are a PhD student r
esearching in the field of multilingual literacy development and social pa
rticipation\, you are also cordially invited to present your research at t
he doctoral symposium Literacies for Social Participation at the Universit
y of Hamburg on 27-28 July 2026. The Doctoral Symposium will be part of th
e Summer School. Successful applicants will present their research to an i
nternational audience of their peers and receive in-depth feedback from re
nowned experts in the field. In order to present at the symposium\, you mu
st apply with an abstract for the symposium. More information on the doct
oral symposium can be found here: Link\nImportant: Apply on this website f
or the summer school. If you would also like to present at the doctoral sy
mposium\, you will need to apply via a different website (Link). Participa
tion in the summer school does not require presentation at the doctoral sy
