Communication in Doctoral Supervision (incl. Diversity and Intercultural Aspects)

Working with international doctoral researchers involves cultural differences that shape a range of variables—such as attitudes towards time, hierarchy, and communication styles—but challenges often arise when expectations remain unspoken or are interpreted differently. This interactive workshop focuses on making expectations explicit: clarifying what is required within the university context while creating space for dialogue and the co-creation of effective working styles. Participants will leave with practical ways to set expectations early, navigate differences, and build a supervision style that combines clarity with flexibility.

This event is suited for the potential to engaged experienced supervisor.

The MIN Faculty at University of Hamburg supports supervisors and doctoral researchers in navigating the increasingly complex demands of academic supervision. This modular programme is primarily designed for supervisors and co-supervisors within the MIN Faculty, but participants from other faculties and institutions are very welcome to join.

Across eight interactive workshops (3 hours each), participants explore key aspects of effective supervision – from communication and meetings to expectations, conflict management, and good scientific practice. All modules can be attended individually.

What you gain from participation:

  • Practical skills for effective one-on-one supervision
  • Preventing conflicts by aligning expectations and clarifying roles
  • Tools for structuring meetings, providing constructive feedback, and handling challenges
  • Approaches to foster motivation, self-organization, and a productive research environment
  • Knowledge of good scientific practice and ethical supervision

Participants who attend at least five modules, including Module 8, receive the certificate “Certified Supervisor”, which can be included in academic CVs. A certificate of attendance is issued for each individual module.
