DESCRIPTION:Vertical Momentum Fluxes associated with the Rossby\, mixed Ro
ssby-gravity\, inertia-gravity\, and Kelvin waves on the sphere\nGenerated
in the troposphere\, vertically propagating Rossby\, inertia-gravity (IG)
\, and equatorial Kelvin and mixed Rossby-gravity (MRG) waves transport ho
rizontal momentum into the stratosphere\, where they interact with the mea
n flow. This wave-mean flow coupling is diagnosed through vertical momentu
m fluxes (VMFs) and is responsible\, among other phenomena\, for the leadi
ng mode of variability in the tropical stratosphere\, the Quasi-Biennial O
scillation (QBO). Quantifying VMFs and attributing them to individual wave
types is therefore essential for understanding the stratospheric dynamics
\, particularly processes behind the QBO.\nIn my thesis I propose a new no
rmal-mode function (NMF) based decomposition method for quantifying VMFs b
y wave type. Decomposition is based on spatial structure of waves rather t
han wavenumber-frequency properties\, making the separation of VMFs by wav
e type less ambiguous since different modes can be distinguished even thou
gh they coexist at the same wavenumber and frequency.\n \nFor online part
 icipation\, please register by Thursday\, 18 June\, 6 p.m. The link will b
 e sent after registration closes.\n\nhttps://www.conferences.uni-hamburg.d
